TechFear + TechEnvy = TechOpportunity

March 5th, 2009  |  Published in Consumer Electronics, Marketing to Women

I experienced technology fear yesterday. Not personally, but genetically - my mother was looking up someone’s name in …. THE WHITE PAGES. Her fingers were doing the walking. I don’t know the last time I opened a big clunky phone book, put my fingers on the page thus smearing the ink, and squinted my eyes to find the one name amidst thousands.

She’s a Boomer that has a basic understanding of technology but is afraid to explore it. She loves finding out how new technology works and being able to experience it (a big Skyper), but needs it to be simple enough to not “break it.”

I see my mother as a great case study of both fear of technology and an insatiable curiosity about experiencing it.  A perfect segment for technology adoption using disciplined messaging and easy-to-use product features.

If anyone needs my mother’s information as a test subject for new technology/communication, just let me know.
